Cities Served by Area Code 678

678 is a Georgia telephone area code that covers the northern suburbs of Atlanta. The area code includes the cities of Alpharetta, Avondale Estates, Chamblee, Doraville, Dunwoody, Johns Creek, Marietta, Roswell, Sandy Springs, and Smyrna. 678 was created on January 15, 1998, as a split from area code 404. In November 2009, the Georgia Public Service Commission proposed an overlay of 678 with area code 770. This proposed overlay would have created ten-digit dialing between the two area codes. However, on January 11, 2011, the overlay was canceled.

In March 2011, the PSC voted to allow an overlay of 678 with area code 470, which took effect on November 1, 2011. This created an additional 10 million numbers available for use in the 470 area code.

Toll Charges for 678 Area Code Phone Numbers

What do you think about the new toll charges for 678 area code phone numbers?I think it's unfair. I live in the 678 area code, and I'm being charged to call my family and friends.

The new toll charges went into effect on July 1, and they apply to all calls made within the 678 area code. The charge is $0.50 per call, and it applies to both landline and mobile phone numbers.

Some people are saying that the new toll charges are a way for the phone companies to make money. But I think it's just a way to make it more difficult for people in the 678 area code to communicate with each other.
